Canada Loves The Wonder Girls

h1 The Wonder Girls were in Vancouver last Monday to promote their single “Nobody” in Canada. The group has been opening for the Jonas Brothers at concerts since late last month.

JYP Entertainment, the management company for the Wonder Girls, said fan interest in Vancouver was especially “so hot.” Dressed in matching white dresses, the girls performed their Linktrademark “Nobody dance” in front of 30,000 people. Park Jin-young (the JYP of JYP Entertainment) remarked on Twitter after the performance that “everybody was doing the nobody dance!” at the show.

According to Park, the performance was such a success that “the Jonas Brothers and their management officially asked [the Wonder Girls] to open for their entire U.S. tour,” meaning they’ll play ahead of the Jonas Brothers in 45 more concerts.

BANG Showbiz

The Canadian hunk believes less-than-handsome guys can still grab themselves a hot girl if they are charming or talented.

Ryan -- who is married to screen beauty Scarlett Johansson -- told the German edition of In Touch magazine: "For men it's not really important to be good looking. Charisma and skills are a lot more important."

The 34-year-old actor doesn't care that people think he is attractive and is adamant people who define themselves by their looks are misguided.

Ryan -- who was crowned People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 2008 -said: "So what if people think I'm sexy? If I would define myself through that I would be a complete idiot."

Ryan has also lifted the lid on what he finds attractive about Scarlett, insisting her sense of humour and modest personality are the things he loves most about her.

He explained: "Contrary to a lot of other actresses she doesn't take everything so serious und is able to laugh about herself. Women with humour are just sexy."

Food Network Canada Promotes Horse Slaughter

Next week, during what is known as Horse Week in Canada, the Food Network will air episode six of Top Chef Canada. They have come up with a timely way to promote horses during Horse Week. EATING THEM.

Mmmmm... It's What's for Dinner

Mmmmm... It's What's for Dinner

I have sent a letter to Food Network, as well as Presidents Choice since they are the sponsor. Oh, and Shaw Media. (Links to contact them are listed at the bottom of this article).

This is the letter I sent:

I am very disturbed to hear you are doing a show where people are going to cook horse meat.

While I understand it is eaten internationally, and in small pockets of Canada (mainly Quebec), I have to wonder if you understand fully about the horse slaughter industry in Canada in particular.

Do you understand that the horse meat is tainted with drugs perma-banned from the food chain? Phenylbutazone (or “Bute”) is known to induce blood dyscrasias, including aplastic anemia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, and deaths – and is given regularly to horses. (http://notabreed.wordpress.com/2011/03/15/interesting-article-proves-my-points/). No amount of “detox” time rids the body of many of the drugs given to horses.

Do you understand that the slaughter industry in the US AND Canada creates an ecological mess? (http://www.nashvillescene.com/pitw/archives/2010/04/09/former-mayor-horse-slaughterhouses-a-drain-on-taypayers-never-mind-the-ditches-of-blood) and from Canada (http://canadianhorsedefencecoalition.wordpress.com/2010/12/11/bouvry-slaughterhouse-temporarily-shut-down/) with video evidence (http://www.flixya.com/video/1554764/Natural-Valley-Farms-Illegally-dumps-horse-blood-i)

And finally, horses are not raised as food chain animals. They are trusting of humans, mostly treated as pets, and then go through the terror of inhumane treatment during transport (no food or water for days, over-packed stock trailers with not enough head room, etc.) and then the final, gut wrenching torture of the slaughter process that was designed for cattle, not horses. Horses have been equated with deer when it comes to their flight response. Cattle are nothing like that. Poor design of slaughter houses for horses increase the torture and inhumanity of the process.

Please read this report on a Canadian slaughter house: http://www.defendhorsescanada.org/pdf/envf0802.pdf

One last question: did you realize that Horse Week is June 4th to June 12th? Please know that this is going around on Facebook, and I do fully intend on publishing this letter along with a story on my blog. I’ll also link to the story everywhere I can. People are calling for letters and emails to PC, as well as your organization. The overall feeling from the equine community is one of disgust and outrage. I hope you think about this before airing your episode – ever. Horses are not food chain animals, and the promotion of them as such is ignorant.

Please write them a letter, and let them know you are NOT supportive of this sort of TV experience in Canada.

Coalition of African Americans promotes culture and education

Two students invigorated by City College’s display of diversity at Unity Day, an event when students gather to promote their affiliate clubs, have recently formed a new student association, the Coalition of African Americans.

While there are other affiliate groups for black students at City College, the recently formed coalition’s goal for representation of black students at campus events embraces an educational mission in addition to the cultural platform.

The founders, Jesse James and Essandra Gilbeaux, met in French class during spring 2010. They both admired the organized presence of groups like the Latino and Asian student associations and the cultural events they hosted.

“Black students and black culture were not as well represented as other cultures who had events,” James said.

The coalition’s soft organizing around shared culture, art, food and experience is the most visible part of their efforts. But their larger goals are ambitious and profoundly focused on education and community.

“We want to promote education along with our culture,” said COAA member Lakysha Cummings, a sophomore at City College.

“Education and culture are a bit contrary to each other in many black communities. Education is not really valued in African American culture, but they know it’s important,” she said.

By hosting more public events, COAA hopes to increase their visibility to black students, Cummings said. The coalition wants to let African American students know there is support for their academic careers from their peers within the school.

The COAA is hosting a major five-hour event in front of the Wellness Center May 4 where “there’s good foot traffic and where a lot of black students hang out,” James said. The event is being organized by the 5- to 6-person core membership of COAA and will feature poetry, food and music, and lots of outreach.

COAA Vice President Gilbeaux hopes the event “completes our organizational foundation so we are a continuous organization and we have enough momentum to continue to host black heritage events with active participation.”

Gilbeaux’s themes of stability and permanence are synchronous with co-founder James’ path as an engineering major — he plans to pursue civil engineering so he can build bridges and roads, things that last, he said. Next semester he will transfer to a four-year college and Gilbeaux will carry the organization forward.

Long-term goals
The coalition’s one-year goal is to “go out into the community and get people signed up for college,” James said.

To achieve the community college outreach effort they’re going to need a lot more students. But it’s a real challenge to find students who will commit to the time required to help their community, Gilbeaux said.

The COAA membership is still small, with about 30 students signed up, and constitutes the gains of active outreach since fall 2010. The coalition co-hosted a Black History Month event in February with the two other campus organizations. James has made announcements of the clubs presence to every African-American studies class and multiple history classes.

To add members at first, James walked around with a clipboard and a sign-up list but wasn’t adding many new members. Outreach for new members was a little more successful when the COAA held bake sales on campus, said lead cupcake baker Cummings.

The bake sales stimulated conversation about the COAA’s effort to be part of the African-American students’ academic support structure so the college experience is not a solo journey, James said.

The challenge James found is that many more students came to the bake sale table to talk than to join.

“Everyone talks about community, but few want to pull it together for actual community organizing,“ James said.

But the COAA core members remain undeterred. They hope to sign up many more students at the May 4 event “The Black Heritage Celebration.” Unified in their emphasis on educational opportunities for black students, they’re confident that the coalition’s mission will resonate when students hear it.

“We want to promote the need to be focused on school to succeed in education: we need to block out a lot of noise to take education seriously. Black people have a lot of things going on in their neighborhoods, but it’s important to create these networks and partnerships to succeed in school,” Cummings said.

German American Energy Conference showcases the U.S.-Market Potential in Renewable Energy and discusses Germany's and America's Energy Future
Berlin/Houston, TX - May 3, 2011 The United States take on a new direction in terms of their power supply. In this year's State of the Union address, United States President Barack Obama called for the ambitious target of obtaining 80% of U.S. energy from clean energy by 2035.

In order to achieve this goal, the American government will focus on a massive expansion of renewable energy, which offers German companies the unique chance to invest in an emerging market. To showcase the US market potential in renewable energy and to discuss Germany’s and America’s energy future, the German American Chambers of Commerce (GACC) and the German Energy Agency (dena) are hosting the 3rd German American Energy Conference in Berlin on May 12 – 13, 2011.

German American Energy Conference: Strong Focus on Business Opportunities for German Companies

Noted experts will discuss prospects for investments in the US energy market during the conference, which is titled “Global Energy Challenges – Transatlantic Business Opportunities” in Berlin on May 12 – 13, 2011.

The 3rd GAE is hosted by the German American Chambers of Commerce (GACC) and the German Energy Agency (dena). During the event Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and the GACC will present the survey “German American Renewable Energy Outlook” which assesses the emerging opportunities and possible restraints on the US energy market that German companies may face.

“The United States has much ground to cover on their way towards becoming more reliable in clean energy. This provides excellent business opportunities for the German clean energy sector,” says Jan Christoph Wiedemann, Managing Director of the GACC of the Southern United States in Houston, Texas. “German companies are amongst the top leaders in the renewable energy market. The American market offers excellent conditions for strong growth.”

Claudia Vogel, head of the renewable energy section of the dena, emphasizes “The German American Energy Conference offers noted speakers from various backgrounds, as well as practical hands-on advise for market entry strategies in the United States. This makes for an excellent platform for companies, which are interested in the US market.”

Amongst the top-class speakers is the German Federal Minister for Economics and Technology, Mr. Rainer Brüderle, the U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Mr. Philip D. Murphy, the US Counselor of the EU for Energy, Environment and Technology, Mr. Louis Bono, the German Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Ms. Katherina Reiche, the Managing Director of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce, Dr. Martin Wansleben, the Managing Director of the Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH, Mr. Stephan Kohler and the Member of the Executive Board of the Federation of German Industries, Dr. Stefan Mair.

Strong Growth Expected for Solar and Wind Energy Projects in the United States

Due to a missing legal framework on a federal level, many US States are pushing towards the expansion of renewable energy on a state level. Market leaders are California and Texas, which promote a strong growth of renewable energy by offering various incentives and initiatives. German manufacturers already have a strong presence in these markets. In December 2010, Siemens was commissioned to construct 258 wind energy turbines with a total capacity of almost 600 MW by the American utility MidAmerican – the largest order in the history of the German group. Solar Millennium AG is currently building the world largest solar energy system in Blythe, California, where ultimately 1,000 MW will be produced by four solar heat power plants (CSP).

In 2010, investments in photovoltaic accelerated by 67%, summing up the total investment to 6 billion US-Dollars in the United States. A capacity of 965 MW was installed bringing the total solar energy capacity to 2.6 GW. As of now, more than 65,000 homes and companies use solar thermal systems in the United States. The solar industry aims to provide two million homes with solar energy by 2015.

New installations in the American wind energy market declined from 10 GW in 2009 to 5 GW in the past year. However, experts expect a strong recovery in 2011. At the beginning of this year, new projects with a capacity of 5.6 GW are already under construction. The total wind energy capacity in the United States expanded to 40,180 GW (+15%). One fourth of this capacity was installed in the State of Texas alone. It is expected that the construction of the first offshore wind energy projects will begin by end of this year.

Up to now, there are no feed-in tariffs on a federal level in the United States. Renewable Energy is mainly promoted via tax credits in the United States, e.g. with the “Investment Tax Credit” and the “Production Tax Credit”, which offer tax deductions when investing in solar and wind systems.

The German American Energy Conference is supported by the German Ministry of Economics and Technology, by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce, the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the Federation of German Industries, by Germany Trade & Invest and the Representative of German Industry & Trade (RGIT). Premium Sponsor is Tüv Rheinland North America, Inc. Conference partners are amongst others the American Council On Renewable Energy, and the Council of American States in Europe.
